One in eight women

For us, the CARRY Bottle is like a blank canvas. We want to use this space to address topics that are important to us and that we want to educate people about, such as health. This includes preventive care for the early detection of diseases. People with statutory health insurance are entitled to a whole range of regular examinations, including for various types of cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women between the ages of 35 and 55. The exact cause is often unclear.

In this article, we want to take a closer look at the disease that affects around one in eight women in their lifetime. And with our new BOOBIES design, we are supporting the German Breast Cancer Association in the fight against breast cancer!

When we think of breast cancer, we first think of the female breast, but did you know that the breasts of boys and girls are practically identical? It is only from puberty onwards that estrogen causes the milk ducts, connective tissue and fatty tissue to grow in the female body. In men, remnants of the milk ducts remain even after puberty and they can also develop breast cancer. About one in 100 cases of breast cancer occurs in men and is often only detected late.

Early detection is crucial for better chances of recovery. The most common symptom of breast cancer is lumps or hardening in the breast or armpit. This also includes visible deformation of the breast or changes to the skin and bleeding or other discharge from the nipple. If you feel or notice such changes in your breast, you should go to your gynecologist as soon as possible.

To do this, you should regularly palpate your breasts and armpits and examine your body. Get to know your own breasts and palpate them once a month. If you are unsure, talk to your friends or ask your doctor if he or she can show you the examination. The best time for self-examination is the 7th to 10th day after your period has started. If your period has already stopped, just choose a fixed day of the month. It is best to do the examination while standing and also once while lying down to be on the safe side.
Breast Cancer Germany provides the following self-examination guide to help you get to know your breasts.

From the age of 30, statutory health insurance companies also recommend a professional screening for breast cancer. This takes place in a gynecological practice and the costs are covered by your health insurance company. Similar to a self-examination, the examination consists of a structured palpation of both breasts. In addition, the armpits and the areas around the collarbone and breastbone are also palpated. Changes in the shape and size of the breasts and nipples are checked. You can find more information atBreast Cancer Germany.

From the age of 50, health insurance companies also recommend a mammography screening for early detection. If the results are unclear, an ultrasound examination (sonography) is carried out. You will receive an invitation every two years and can make an appointment. On site, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and will be personally looked after by an X-ray assistant. For the X-ray, the breast is briefly compressed, which can be slightly painful. Two doctors then independently examine the X-ray images millimeter by millimeter. 97% of the examinations are unremarkable. If something seems suspicious, you will be invited for further examinations and if a diagnosis is made afterwards, you will be sent to a qualified clinic.

There, it will be determined whether the tumor is malignant and what tumor characteristics it has. A decision will then be made as to whether therapy or surgery is an option. Have the surgical procedures explained to you in detail. These include breast-conserving procedures, breast removal and reconstruction using foreign and autologous tissue.

Other recommendations apply to people who have a higher hereditary risk of disease. If a genetic change in the BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 gene has been identified, screening tests should be carried out from the age of 25 or at least 5 years before the youngest age of disease in the family: palpation and sonography every 6 months, and an MRI every 12 months.

As with most cancers, the exact causes of breast cancer are rarely determined. Factors that increase the risk of breast cancer include smoking, contact with carcinogenic substances, increased alcohol consumption, type 2 diabetes, an increased body mass index and too little exercise.

Boobies in all shapes

Boobies in all shapes

We see them everywhere, but they are still one of the taboo subjects in our society - boobs, breasts, boobies, busts. All breasts should be celebrated and loved - no matter what shape, size, whether amputated or operated. With our new design BOOBIES we stand for more acceptance and self-love towards our breasts and bodies. We position ourselves against body shaming, exclusion and discrimination and are committed to living diversity. All breasts are wonderful and it is good and important to accept your own!

When a disease such as breast cancer requires breast removal, it is a dramatic change for the person, which must be dealt with in addition to dealing with the threat to their own life. This is why it is all the more important to accept and celebrate all breasts, regardless of their shape and appearance.
