For some time now, we have been thinking about how we can put our rejects to good use instead of recycling them directly. In addition to our discounted B-stock grab bag for our drinking bottles, which has been online in the shop since the end of 2023, we have been actively looking for alternatives. And why not just cut off the blemishes and reuse the undamaged remainder as a new, high-quality product? Tadaaa, the idea of the upcycling CARRY Glass was born. A drinking glass that perfectly complements the CARRY Bottle.

In this post you will learn what the process looked like behind the scenes.

First came the CARRY Bottle

A lot of time and thought went into the design of our CARRY Bottle and the choice of our materials. From the idea to the finished drinking bottle, we made many product decisions. First of all, we had to decide what material our bottle should be made of. We chose glass because it has great product properties that are perfect for our CARRY Bottles and simply convinced us 😊 Find out moremore about the materialsin our CARRY Bottle and our CARRY Glass.

Our CARRY Bottle is a natural product: During production, we are heavily dependent on the material supplies (used glass shards, quartz sand, soda, lime) and also on the processing machines and other external circumstances. Therefore, defects and unevenness are quite normal and do not affect the functionality. For example, small air bubbles are usually hidden by the pressure. For some time now, we have been packing drinking bottles with several visible defects in ourGrab bag.

Love at second sight

The surprise bag bottles only have visual defects and are 100% functional. With them, we want to give crooked printing and irregularities in the glass a chance. And at the same time, we are doing something good for the environment and can offer you the bottles at a discounted price - a win-win-win situation!

Possible defects include glass defects, air inclusions (large air bubbles) and printing errors. Glass defects include scratches and several lines running next to each other, which are easy to feel when you stroke the bottle. It can of course also happen that we do not have any bottles with defects and the lucky bag is therefore temporarily unavailable.

Like moving to a new city

But sometimes you just need a cut. Sometimes we have to say goodbye to old things to create something new. Some bottles have such severe flaws that we can't sell them. Throwing them away or putting them straight back into the glass melt would be a real waste of resources. In recent productions, we have repeatedly had to deal with an increasing number of errors and defects. This creates rejects that cannot be used. This is where our glasses come into play. Following our sustainability approach, we have been thinking for some time about what we can do with our rejects. After thoroughly researching various suppliers in Europe, we decided on a German partner near Wertheim.

Cut a bottle in two?

We also wondered how it would work. At first, Stefanie, our managing director, cut and sanded the CARRY Bottle by hand using a machine we ordered ourselves. Since that worked quite well, we looked for a manufacturer in Germany who could deliver a quality that was satisfactory to us. And this is how it works:

  1. The faulty CARRY Bottles will be delivered to our partner.
  2. There they are scratched at the predetermined breaking point, at a height of 12.5 or 13 cm, depending on the size of the glass.
  3. Pressure is then built up in the glass using gas.
  4. The gas is finally caused to “explode” with a spark, so that the scratched areas are blown open.
  5. Finally, the glasses are ground on the grinding plate and flamed to create the fused edges, which provide a particularly pleasant drinking experience.

We offer the drinking glasses in sets of 2 and 4. And we have chosen two sizes - 300 and 400 ml from the former 0.7l and 1.0l CARRY Bottle respectively. Because what is missing from the CARRY Bottle standing alone on the table? Exactly, drinking glasses for dinner with friends and family or for a meeting in the office.

What makes our CARRY Glass so special?

We can actually list the same arguments here as for our tried and tested CARRY Bottle: Both products are made of robust glass and allow for comfortable grip thanks to the narrow body - even for children's hands. They are both dishwasher and carbonated safe and also suitable for hot temperatures. Here you should make sure that glass does not like large temperature fluctuations. Therefore, please always preheat the CARRY Glass and the Bottle and only allow them to cool down slowly. The CARRY Bottles are cut apart using pressure, the edge is ground and the edges are then fused together to ensure a pleasant drinking experience. We love the new drinking glasses, see for yourself😊
