DIY chestnut detergent

DIY Kastanien Waschmittel

Autumn, autumn, autumn is here... and there are beautiful chestnuts everywhere. For example, the backyard of our office is teeming with them. Did you know that you can easily make detergent from them? Contrary to all my expectations, it doesn't have to be that complex to achieve the desired effect. The reason for this is the saponins contained in chestnuts (among other things), which have a similar effect to soap in water. With these saponins you can make a completely natural, biodegradable detergent, which is also free. So, if you need motivation for your next autumn walk, you can simply combine it with a chestnut collection campaign.

This is what you need

For one wash cycle

  • 7-8 chestnuts per wash
  • 300 ml tap water
  • A sealable container
  • One night lead time
  • Essential oil as desired (for the good smell)

preparation

Collect some nice chestnuts and wash them to remove any coarse dirt. Cut or chop them into small pieces. It doesn't matter how you do it, but the smaller the better! This way the saponins can escape more easily. Put the chestnuts in a container and pour water over them. Stir once, close the lid and leave to steep for a couple of hours, preferably overnight. After a while you will notice that the water is becoming cloudier and foam is forming on the surface. You can now pour the liquid through a sieve. And tadaaa, your homemade detergent is ready! :) This liquid will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days and can be used like normal liquid detergent. For a pleasant smell just add a few drops of oil, such as lavender oil.
